Woman fatally struck crossing street in Newark

A woman was fatally struck by a vehicle Tuesday night as she attempted to cross a street in Newark, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 8:30 p.m. when a vehicle traveling north on First Street attempted to turn left onto Central Avenue when the victim was hit, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The woman, who has not been identified, was taken to University Hospital, where she died.
No charges were filed against the driver, who immediately called 911 and remained at the scene, the prosecutor’s office said.
The crash remains under investigation by the prosecutor’s office, the spokeswoman said.
